Alaska Wedding Bridal Fashions

A range of looks, from stylish to rugged.

Alaska is such a wild, beautiful wilderness that any bride's special wedding day look will be wonderfully enhanced. How to keep that landscape from overpowering your own beautiful preparations? With the right gown and accessories! Your style of dress will depend most upon the season in which you marry. The Alaskan summer is short but sweet, seeing the most sunshine in June and July. Fall, spring, and even the long Alaskan winter can be fine times to marry, and each season is best suited by different looks, cuts, lines and fabrics.

Alaska Summer Wedding Fashion

If you've chosen to marry in summer, the temperature from Anchorage south will be in the 50's and 60's most days of June and July, with an occasional gem in the 70's. The light in the sky will last long into the evening in most parts of the state, upwards of 11 o'clock or midnight in some cases.

The air may be damp and humid around the coast, and rain is quite common along the southern coast. However, cross your fingers and hope for a sunny day (they do happen every once in a while) when choosing your gown. You may have a backup indoor site in mind, and it will likely be a bit cool -- indoors or out, a sleeveless silhouette style dress accompanied by a white wrap of a fabric complementary to your dress such as chiffon will keep you warm, and can be easily be set aside if need be. A tea length gown of linen or silk might also be appropriate, perhaps set off with a simple pink ribbon tied about the waist. It is best to have layers available in Alaska's colder climate.

Great summer dress fabrics include batiste, charmeuse, silk and even brocade in the colder reaches of the state. The state's native gemstone, jade, may add a cool green accent to your look if you have chosen to incorporate the state's lush, verdant summer landscape into your theme. Along the coast and on the islands, an elegant, white umbrella is not a bad accessory idea, either.

Also look to the colors of the summer season and your wedding theme for accents. The wild native forget-me-not, the state flower, blooms through the summer months, and has a cheerful palette of sky blue, yellow, and chocolate. Think about sapphire or lapis lazuli for accent earrings and necklaces to complement your look. Your dress should not be overshadowed by your adornments or jewelry.

Fall Wedding Fashions

Look to sage and dusky gray for accent colors for your gown as well as your bridesmaid's dresses. A cream-colored dress of silk or satin with a light embroidered pattern will give your dress a distinctive style that fits well with the Alaskan landscape which will frame you on this special day. Again, brocade may be a nice option if you like a more ornate look with a raised pattern. Deep amber, orange or burgundy accents might also complement your style, and you can continue your dusky theme with smoky quartz, amber, or tiger's eye jewelry for your attendants, and and pearl jewelry for your own accent pieces. A silver tiara might complete a princess look with an A-line or flowing dress.

Winter Bridal Fashion Ideas

If marrying during the Alaskan winter, your bridal fashion will inevitably be influenced by the chill in the air, but a heavy brocade with an over-wrap may keep you warm enough -- if not, throw on a classy white jacket or overcoat during the times you'll be outside, and shed those outer layers when it comes time for your ceremony and reception. Look to blues and purples to bring out the essence of the season, along with deep crimsons and creams for a warm, wonderful look. Keep in mind that although it's frigid outside, it might be a bit hotter for an indoor reception. It makes a lot of sense to incorporate layers into your wedding dress, so you can easily add and remove warmth from your body to keep you comfortable and looking radiant.
